What are the pollution levels like in Shady Cove?

Shady Cove is a city located in the northern region of Jackson County; one of 36 counties found within the state of Oregon. The level of air pollution within the city has shown some poor readings in times past and continues to do so in current times, due to certain causes driving up the US AQI levels, as well as the PM2.5 readings. Despite having had poor air quality readings in the past, with several months over 2020 coming in with elevated readings, there were also many months of the year in which the air quality was actually at a fairly respectable level, with the first eight months of the year coming in with optimal levels of air cleanliness, with PM2.5 readings that fell within the World Health Organization's (WHO's) guidelines for the most optimal or safe levels of pollution present.

However, towards the end of the year, Shady Cove started to experience some rather poor levels of air quality, due to the advent of forest and wildfires causing the pollution levels to spike significantly. In many cities and states throughout America, wildfires are the most prominent cause of extremes of pollution readings, with other polluting sources unable to bring the PM2.5 readings close to what a wildfire can do. As such, they are considered as one of the most damaging elements in regards to a cities air quality, and during times that fires take place, extra precaution should be practiced, particularly amongst groups of people that fall into the vulnerable or at-risk demographic.

In mid-August of 2021, Shady Cove presented with a US AQI reading of 196, placing the city into the upper reaches of the 'unhealthy' air quality rating bracket. This is color-coded as red (with each higher pollution rating having a darker color, going from red to purple and then maroon for the most severe cases). An 'unhealthy' air quality rating requires a US AQI reading of anywhere between 151 to 200, making the air quality in Shady Cove at such a time fairly dangerous to breathe, with numerous ill effects occurring amongst the entirety of the population, as well as affecting those who are more vulnerable.

These vulnerable groups include young children, babies, the elderly and pregnant women. Others also include those with compromised immune systems, as well as those with pre-existing health conditions or a hypersensitivity towards pollution exposure.

At the time in which the above-mentioned US AQI reading was taken, the PM2.5 count was found to be 14 times higher than the World Health Organization's (WHO's) recommendation for a safe level of exposure. In closing, Shady Cove can maintain a great level of air quality throughout the year but may be subject to sudden spikes in air pollution thus necessitating the use of certain preventative measures when they do occur, as well as staying up to date on air quality conditions.

What are the main contributing causes of air pollution in Shady Cove?

Besides the most prominent cause of air pollution spikes present in Shady Cove, there would also be other sources of pollution present that are responsible for raising the yearly ambient pollution reading. These would be sources such as emissions and fumes from vehicles. Cars, motorbikes and other smaller personal vehicles would all release a variety of chemical compounds and fine particles from their exhaust when in use. Compounding the vehicular pollution situation is also the use of larger and heavier freight vehicles, which includes trucks, certain buses and lorries. These vehicles can often rely on using diesel fuel as their main source, the combustion of which (as a fossil fuel) causes the output of greater amounts of pollution and contaminating particles.

Furthermore, with mass vehicle usage (with vehicle ownership increasing each year, both in the United States and worldwide) comes the widespread release of microscopic rubber particles into the atmosphere. This occurs as a result of the residual wear and tear incurred upon the wheels, and over many years, has resulted in many tons of ultrafine rubber particles being deposited into bodies of water, the air, and the environment. Whilst not related to air pollution, the addition of ultrafine rubber (and microplastic) particles into the environment and surrounding ecosystems can have the dangerous effect of entering into the food chain, which can have far-reaching consequences on the health of wild animals and eventually humans.

Other sources of air pollution in Shady Cove include emissions from factories, which can all give off their own form of unique industrial effluence and from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. Although emission standards are much more stringent in the United States when compared to other countries worldwide, pollution release can still occur, affecting the yearly PM2.5 levels.

What are the effects of fine particles in the air in Shady Cove?

As mentioned, besides the US AQI reading being the predominant form of air quality measuring, PM2.5 is also used prevalently, especially for months from years prior, and for the yearly average pollution reading in any given city, country and state. PM2.5, as touched on previously, is the far more dangerous of the two main types of particle pollution, with the larger PM10 typically only causing irritation to the exposed mucous membranes such as the eyes and mouth, as well as causing mild aggravation of respiratory conditions (or more severe in some cases, depending on the individual and the level of exposure, although as it remains, larger of more coarse particles are the far less hazardous of the two).

PM10 are particles that are 10 micrometers or less in diameter and usually consist of mold spores, bacteria, dust, as well as certain airborne viral particles and smoke. PM2.5 on the other hand, as the name implies, is particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, going down to sizes many microns smaller on occasion, depending on the material that it consists of. Many of these materials have highly adverse health effects, being carcinogenic or otherwise causing permanent damage to the tissue of the lungs, which will be touched on in further detail in the following question regarding health issues caused by pollution exposure.

Much like its larger cousin, PM2.5 also consists of many of the same materials, on a much smaller scale, as well as other materials. These include ones such as metals, nitrates and sulfates, soot and other ultrafine particles that come from smoke or fire sources. Water vapors along with other liquids can be part of the PM2.5 collective, along with the same mold spores, bacteria and viral particles, as well as finely ground silica or gravel dust. Materials such as the main component of soot (black carbon) are known to have highly carcinogenic effects on people when inhaled, as well as also having climate-changing properties. Black carbon can absorb solar radiation directly from the sun and release it as heat, causing a warming effect on the surrounding environment. Finely ground silica dust also has a similar effect, being carcinogenic as well as having the ability to cause damage to the lungs and respiratory tract when exposure is excessive.

PM2.5 is roughly 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair, and as mentioned can go down to sizes many times smaller. It is for this reason that PM2.5 is considered as one of the most dangerous pollutants that can be found in the atmosphere in Shady Cove, as well as throughout the rest of the United States and globally. With its minute size, it can bypass the bodies natural defense systems and make its way deep into the tissue of the lungs, either residing there for long periods of time, which carries its own health problems, or migrating further into the body and crossing over into the bloodstream via the alveoli, or small air sacs in the lungs typically meant for the transportation of oxygen molecules into the bloodstream. As one would imagine, having hazardous ultrafine particles in your bloodstream carries with it a myriad of health effects, with many of them having terminal consequences when exposure is prolonged over a long period of time.

What health problems can be caused by bad air quality in Shady Cove?

With a few of the health issues that can be caused by PM2.5 exposure and inhalation already having been discussed, further symptoms and adverse effects of pollution exposure can also be mentioned. General information on the ill effects of pollution exposure and proper access to it is of great importance, as with the knowledge of such conditions often comes the desire to not only reduce one’s exposure but also to aid in reducing one’s own pollutive output.

Health issues that are common amongst those that have high levels of exposure (as would be typical during bouts of high pollution levels, such as the ones that occurred during early to mid-August of 2021, along with the latter period of 2020 also showing prominent elevations in its PM2.5 count) would be surface-level ones such as dry coughs, chest pain and infections, along with aggravation of pre-existing health conditions. These more ‘superficial’ conditions will tend to cease once pollution exposure is lessened, or halted outright, with little to no long-lasting damage, apart from potentially those who fall into the more vulnerable demographic, particularly the elderly due to how respiratory illnesses can progress amongst those above a certain age.

As mentioned above, some pre-existing conditions are ones that typically fall under the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) bracket, due to their prevalence in cases of pollution exposure, with chemical compounds and fine particles typically having first contact with the human body either via the skin or the respiratory tract. COPD is an umbrella term that encompasses a few different ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, aggravated forms of asthma as well as emphysema.

Skin issues can also occur, particularly amongst certain individuals who have a hypersensitive disposition towards pollution exposure. These include acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and eczema. Moving into more dangerous territory, once the aforementioned PM2.5 particles have entered the bloodstream, they can cause damage to the blood vessels, as well as traveling to further reaches within the body. Cancer rates can go up significantly, along with instances of ischemic heart disease. This occurs when the heart fails to receive an adequate supply of oxygen, thus causing damage to the tissue which can have a compounding effect on one’s cardiovascular health and life expectancy. Other more serious issues include increased rates of heart attacks, arrhythmias, strokes and even death. Pollution exposure is directly linked to many cases of premature deaths, and thus the mortality rate of any given location that is subject to extremes of US AQI or PM2.5 readings can go up significantly if exposure is not significantly lessened or controlled.

As mentioned at the top of this page during bouts of high pollution, preventative measures become highly important during polluting events. These include taking actions such as wearing fine particle filtering masks, as well as avoiding outdoor strenuous activity. Doors and windows can also be sealed to prevent outdoor pollution from contaminating the indoor air quality levels, and air purifiers can also be run, if they are available. Those who fall into the sensitive or at-risk demographic should take particular care to follow such guidelines during wildfires or other times of the year in which the pollution level rises significantly. When is the air at its most polluted in Shady Cove?

Observing the PM2.5 levels from 2020, it can be seen that Shady Cove had its highest bout of air pollution in the last third of the year, with September through to December having the highest PM2.5 readings. They were 42.9 μg/m³, 12.7 μg/m³, 11.6 μg/m³ and 15 μg/m³ respectively.

This was a similar story for many other cities in the vicinity in the state of Oregon during 2020, with September being the most polluted month, followed by other months that also had noticeable elevations. Whilst this will not be indicative of how the pollution levels will be for each year, it may give a warning as to when wildfires are most likely to occur, and thus the pollution levels rise along with them accordingly.

When does the air quality improve in Shady Cove?

Despite having a significantly more polluted end of the year, Shady Cove also had some extremely clean months present for the first two-thirds of the year. January through to August all came in with readings that fell within the WHO's target goal of 10 μg/m³ or less, for the best level of air quality.

These readings were 6.1 μg/m³, 5.2 μg/m³, 4.3 μg/m³, 3.3 μg/m³, 2.7 μg/m³, 2.4 μg/m³, 4.8 μg/m³ and 6.8 μg/m³ respectively. This placed May and June into the cleanest monthly positions of 2020, having PM2.5 readings that are highly respectable, being significantly freer from any unpleasant or hazardous air contaminants, making Shady Cove a very clean city to live in during such times.
